DIY Invitation Tips and Tricks

Written By: Bridezilla
I know we’ve discussed DIY invitations before. But I thought it wouldn’t hurt for us to go over it again. You don’t have to be a Graphic Designer to get really great invitations at home. I know many of you will say “but I’m not good with computers”. Trust me it’s not that hard. If you know word, and how to send something to your printer, you have the basics down.

Let’s talk a little be about money first. I’m a bride myself, on a $3,000 budget for my wedding. This weekend I went to If It’s Paper, and got some really 150 great invitations, response cards, and thank you notes for $150 . The exactly same products bought threw a national invitation printer would have cost over $800. Now I don’t know about you, but I’m willing to print my own and save $650.
Now lets talk about making it look good. When it comes to design, remember the KISS method. Keep It Simple Silly. Try not to add Lots of pictures, or cheesy clip art. Look at professionally produced invitations online, if you need inspiration for wording or fonts. If you don’t have a lot of fonts to choose from on your computer, look on UrbanFonts or DaFont for something you like. If you want really tasteful invitations look in the following categories:
Medieval: A good place to look for Calligraphy inspired fonts
Celtic: will give you a good mix of Irish and Scottish themed fonts
Initials: Good for fonts for Monograms, but not good fonts to use for all of your text.
Calligraphy: Has some great Calligraphy inspired fonts, but be careful to make sure the font is not so decorative that you can’t read it.
Dingbats: The dingbats category encompasses fonts that aren’t composed of letters, but of graphics. This is a great place to find those small swooshes, symbols, and drawings that have become so popular of wedding invitations.
If any of you brides out their have done your own DIY invitations, send them in. I would love to see them, and they would be a great sorce for the other brides to draw on.

I used Publisher and save some on the design, since we were on a pretty tight budget. If you need any ideas on design, let me know.
