South Carolina Wedding Gift Registry: Knives

When a South Carolina couple is choosing items for their wedding gift registry, they should not forget knives. The basic set of knives contains five knives, a storage block, and sharpening steel. But with so many knife sets in stores how does a South Carolina bride choose?

Look at each knife. Does the blade go all the way to the bottom of the handle? It should. Does the knife blade or the handle wiggle? If it does, do not put it on your registry. Does the knife -feel good” in your hand and your fiancés hand? A high quality knife should feel balanced and should be easy to grip.

Once you have found a knife collection you like, add the fallowing pieces to your South Carolina wedding gift registry:

Bagel/Tomato Knife: A knife with a thin serrated blade. You will use a bagel knife in a sawing motion to prevent bagels and tomatoes from being crushed.

Boning/Utility Knife: The blade on this knife should be about six inches long with a slight curve. A boning knife is perfect for cutting around the bones in fresh meat. It is also the perfect size for general use around the South Carolina kitchen.

Bread Knife: Bread Knives are similar to bagel knives, but longer so they can be used on loaves of fresh baked bread. If you have a bread machine on your South Carolina wedding gift registry, do not leave the store without added a bread knife to the registry.

Carving Fork: A carving fork is a 2 prong fork that holds meat in place while you carve it. Carving Forks frequently come in a set with a carving knife.

Carving Knife: The most popular size of carving knife, on South Carolina wedding gift registries, is a 10 inch blade. A carving knife is great for carving meat and poultry into thin slices.

Chef’s/Cook’s Knife: Chef’s knifes vary in size from 6 to 10 inches long. Choose a blade that is right for your height. If you are taller than 5’5” get a 10 inch blade. If you are 5’ or shorter get a 6 inch blade. If you are somewhere in between, pick which one feels best in your hand. Remember the blade should be wide enough so that when the bottom edge of the blade is against the kitchen counter, your knuckles do not touch the kitchen counter.

Cleaver: A strong knife with a wide rectangular blade (think horror movie). The cleaver is perfect for chopping dense vegetable like pumpkins.

Kitchen Shears: You will want to add two pairs of kitchen shears to your South Carolina wedding gift registry. One pair of kitchen shears can be used for snipping food, like chicken or herbs, and the other pair of kitchen shears can be used on non-food items, like plastic packages and string.

Paring Knife: A paring knife is a small knife with a 3 to 4 inch blade. It is perfect for peeling fruits and vegetables.

Santoku Knife: This is a very sharp knife, with a wide blade. The knife is perfect for dicing and mincing. A santoku knife can be very dangerous and should be kept away from children and clumsy adults.
